A sense of the place

Brussels, officially the Brussels-Capital Region, is a region of Belgium comprising 19 municipalities, including the City of Brussels, which is the capital of Belgium. The Brussels-Capital Region is located in the central portion of the country. It is a part of both the French Community of Belgium and the Flemish Community, and is separate from the Flemish Region , within which it forms an enclave, and the Walloon Region , located less than 4 km south. Brussels grew from a small rural settlement on the river Senne to become an important city-region in Europe. Since the end of the Second World War, it has been a major centre for international politics and home to numerous international organisations, politicians, diplomats and civil servants. Brussels is the de facto capital of the European Union, as it hosts a number of principal EU institutions, including its administrative-legislative, executive-political, and legislative branches . Because of this, its name is sometimes used metonymically to describe the EU and its institutions.

Weather through the year

When to visit Brussels

Temperature

July has the warmest monthly average (18.6°C); January is coolest (2.6°C). These averages include nights, so daytime highs can be considerably warmer.

Rain and outdoor plans

August averages about 79 mm of rain, compared with 38 mm in April. Rainfall alone does not identify a single best month; compare temperatures with the activities you plan.

Planning time outdoors

May, June, July, August, September combine monthly mean temperatures of 12–22°C with less than 100 mm of precipitation. These are useful dates to compare for a walking-focused visit; check daylight, opening times and the forecast for your actual trip.

January, February, December have monthly means below 5°C. For a stay then, compare accommodation heating and keep indoor options in your itinerary. These figures do not establish snow cover or ski conditions.
